South Lane County Fire District Fire Chief News Story

The Mayor and City Manager issued the following statement:

June 2, 2020

We are saddened after reading the report of the alleged statements made by the South Lane County Fire Chief.  The City of Cottage Grove will not take a position on the situation until all the facts are known.  The South Lane Fire District Board of Directors are responsible for investigating the situation, determining the facts and taking any action if necessary.

We are deeply saddened by the death of George Floyd and add our voice of disgust and total disapproval of actions taken to Mr. Floyd that caused his death.  We support all who wish to peacefully and respectfully protest the blatant mistreatment of George Floyd.  We assure members of our community such action is not acceptable and the members of the Cottage Grove Police Department are hired and trained to protect the life and safety of all within the community.

We are also saddened by the violence and destruction that have unnecessarily tainted the lessons that should be learned by George Floyd’s pointless death.  Violence toward others and destruction of property is not the answer and does not strengthen the message that needs to be made.

The City of Cottage Grove and the Cottage Grove Police Department will respect and provide assistance as needed to peaceful protests but will not tolerate criminal behavior that includes violence or destruction of property.

Sincerely,

Mayor Jeffrey Gowing
Richard Meyers, City Manager
