Bo 2010 - 2014
K-9 BO (Served 2010 to 2014)
In January of 2010, "Bo" became Cottage Grove's first primary Narcotics Detection K9. His first night on patrol with Cottage Grove Police Department's newest handler, Officer Ron Bates, was April 20th, 2010. Bo was trained initially by Mack Reid with the Department of Corrections who is a Master Trainer with the Oregon Police Canine Association and has over 20 years experience as a handler and trainer. Bo was assigned to Officer Ron Bates in January of 2010 and the two of them completed the 200 hour basic handler school in April of 2010. Officer Bates and Bo were certified through the Oregon Police Canine Association (OPCA) first and later certified with the Pacific Northwest K9 Association (PNWK9).
Bo was a four year old black Labrador retriever born on January 21, 2006. He was originally purchased from a breeding kennel in Nebraska by Prineville PD. He was traded to the Cottage Grove Police Department for equipment and the entire drug K9 program was funded with seized drug money.
Officer Bates and Bo completed an average of 16 hours of maintenance training every month with other members of the OPCA and PNWK9.
In their first three years as a team, Officer Bates and Bo seized 46.5 pounds of Methamphetamine, 3.5 pounds of Heroin, 71 pounds of Marijuana, $308,448 in seized currency, and were deployed 125 times as a team, responsible for 57 drug related felony arrests and assisted other agencies 27 times.
Sadly, on October 14, 2014, Bo passed away after completing a tour of duty. On a lighter note, one of Bo's puppies, "Kimber", was trained and certified in 2015, and is currently serving as the department Detection K9 under the supervision of Corporal David Burgin.
